Tranna Wintour is a spiritual, pop-culture-obsessed, fashion-hungry, transgender comedian, singer, producer, and writer. She’s basically Barbra Streisand minus the fame, fortune, and cloned dogs. With her unique brand of humour (and glamour!) Tranna has taken the comedy world by storm. She has performed in many festivals including Just For Laughs, Sled Island (Calgary), SheDot (Toronto), LadyFest, Fierté Montréal Pride, Pride Toronto, and Montreal Sketch Fest. Fashion magazine named Tranna one of Canada’s “Comedy Queens Who Rule” and she was named the #1 Best Comedian in CultMTL’s Best of Montreal 2019 poll (after 4 years of being #2!). She has been selected as a competitor in Sirius XM's Top Comic three times and was a featured guest on Sandra Bernhard's SiriusXM show, Sandyland, which has hosted such legendary guests as Bette Midler, Gloria Steinem, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In the last year, Tranna took on her biggest challenge yet: performing en français! Tranna’s french debut has been met with great acclaim and enthusiasm as evidenced by her fabulous appearances on Télé Québec’s L’heure est grâve (where she was featured on three episodes) and V’s L’open mic de… Tranna is now officially a bilingual comedian and loving it!
For the last three years, Tranna and her creative partner/comedy soulmate, Thomas Leblanc, have produced a string a successful pop cabaret shows. Their first, Sainte Celine: A Dion Cabaret (2016), ran for three sold-out performances at Off Just For Laughs/Zoofest. The show was such a triumph that they created a second volume called Sainte Céline: A New, New Day, which ran for 5 sold out nights at The Wiggle Room. The show was also featured at Montreal Pride, where it played on the Casino de Montréal stage in front of nearly 1000 people. Their other shows include Sweet Mariah: A Carey Christmas, Crazy Sexy 90’s (an ode to the women who defined the decade), and their latest, Being Britney: A Pop Tragedy (which will be part of Montreal Pride 2019!). All of these shows are carefully curated, PhD-level deep dives into the universes of their subjects, featuring comedy, live music, drag, and dance. There is truly something magical that happens at these shows in the way that Tranna and Thomas connect with their audiences.
In addition to the shows they perform together, Tranna and Thomas host and co-produce a podcast they originally created in collaboration with the Phi Centre called Chosen Family. Chosen Family placed in the top 10 of iTunes Canada’s top comedy podcasts, it was named one of Apple’s Best Podcasts of 2018, AND it’s been picked up by CBC Podcasts. Yes, Chosen Family is now part of the CBC family! The show celebrates the importance of friendship, resistance, and community at the intersection of art, gender, and sexuality. If that sounds too serious, don’t worry, it’s also hilarious. Guests so far have included Jen Kirkman, John Cameron Mitchell, and Eileen Myles Check it out wherever you get your podcasts!
Tranna is currently working on her musical debut with internationally acclaimed musician and producer Mark Andrew Hamilton (of Woodpigeon and Front Person). The debut album, Safe From Your Affection, will be released in the fall (2019) and features a mix of covers and original songs, co-written by Tranna. The album is a delicate, poetic mix of pop and folk and, as an artist, it is Tranna’s most surprising move yet.
Tranna is also currently performing a new solo show called Dear Alanis: A So-Called Musical Comedy (featuring musical direction by Les Friesen). In this hilarious and poignant show, Tranna dives deep into the musical universe of Alanis Morissette, connecting the songs and their themes (abandonment, perfectionism, self-esteem, neediness, spirituality, addiction) to personal and collective, cultural moments. At its debut performance in May 2019, the show received three standing ovations (yes, it’s that good #humblebrag).
Tranna has been described by legendary comedienne, Sandra Bernhard, as “a candle in the window on a cold, dark winter’s night.” And Tranna shines that light wherever she performs.
